Towing fifth wheeler safer than caravans?
Why are fifth wheeler safer than caravan like the Adventura 27FLB from Pacific RV Australia?
It’s just physics; let me explain in a simple way.
It is all about what I call the “see saw effect”.
Think back and remember when you were a kid in the park playing on a see saw by yourself?
What happens when you stand on the end of a sea saw? Yes, the other end comes up.
Now think that the center of the see saw is the rear axle on your tow vehicle.
So what happens when you put load on the tow ball? Yes, enough weigh on the ball will lighten the load of the front tires.
Now what happens when you stand on the center of a see saw? That right, your weight makes no difference to the balance of the weight on each end of the seesaw. Same with a fifth wheel hitch because it is over the rear axle on the tow vehicle. Actually it increases the down force on the tires and helps by holds the vehicle to the ground.
Now let’s look at the side sway effect on the tow vehicle. Same as above but the seesaw is on its side.
The greater the distance from the rear axle to the tow point (tow ball or pin), the stronger the pushing effect. A caravan on a tow ball at the back of a car will have more side way push than a fifth wheeler. This has a lot to do with why you get sway when towing caravans.
Towing fifth wheeler safer than caravans? Yes it is.
So you can learn physics in a playground!!!
